Improving VDI Experience Through Graphics Acceleration

Easily and securely deploying desktops from servers to users, commonly known as virtualisation, is one of the more prominent and increasingly common technologies in today’s IT world, with its accompanying cost, efficiency and standardisation benefits.pivot3_graphics_acceleration_01

However, as Suzanne Attenborough writes in a blog post on the Pivot3 website, a key reason for non-deployment of desktop virtualisation environments is POC stall. She mentions that this can be due to the difficulty of assembling an environment, either from scratch or from existing hardware and software, lack of executive buy-in and sponsorship, lack of end user buy-in due to poor desktop performance/appearance and a host of other issues.

According to Attenborough, improving desktop user experience in a virtualised environment via graphics acceleration can be a key factor in successful virtualisation. She writes that ‘PCoIP hardware acceleration and GPU acceleration, can combine to maximise graphics operations and display fluidity on a virtual desktop.  Reduce CPU overhead by offloading the most active virtual displays to ensure its capabilities are used where most needed. In the process, the server consolidation ratio increases up to 2x.  The ability to offload graphics processing from the central processing unit (CPU) to the graphics processing unit (GPU) in virtualised environments allows the data center manager to deliver graphics-rich experiences to users.’

Using graphics acceleration options, a combination of CPU and GPU offload, Pivot3 vSTAC R2S appliances meet the most demanding graphic needs of top-end Windows 8, Office 13 and power users.’
